Legal Service Plans
Legal service plans have become a popular employee benefit and service offering in recent years, and many companies now offer this type of benefit. Though not typically specific to Identity Theft incidents, a legal service plan might provide you with the added benefit of valuable legal assistance if you do not have an attorney on retainer, or at least a discount on an attorney's hourly fees.
In serious Identity Theft cases, particularly those involving non-financial or criminal misuse of your identity, it is advisable for you to have the assistance of an attorney. For instance, access to legal counsel is obviously needed if you are being detained, questioned, or arrested by law enforcement or security personnel due to the actions of an identity thief. In many criminal Identity Theft cases, for example, a victim's initial discovery of their stolen identity may occur through a routine traffic stop when they are subsequently arrested for a crime they have no knowledge of. Such an occurrence could take place at any time, day, night, or weekend, and in any state. Other incidents that may require the assistance of qualified legal counsel include instances of liens, judgments, wage garnishments, or collection activities that result from the actions of an identity thief.
Legal plans can vary widely in their coverage, costs, and service options. As with any plan or service, the specifics of the coverage, restrictions and limitations, and the associated costs should be carefully reviewed in order to make an informed decision before enrolling.
