Opt-Out of Telemarketing Lists: The Direct Marketing Association Telephone Preference Service
The Direct Marketing Association is a trade organization that governs member companies that use direct mail, email, and telephone marketing methods. The D.M.A. offers consumers three services to reduce unwanted personal (not business) solicitations by its member companies via mail, telephone, and e-mail:
-
MPS (Mail Preference Service)
-
TPS (Telephone Preference Service)
-
E-MPS (E-Mail Preference Service)
D.M.A. Telephone Preference Service (TPS)
The Direct Marketing Association's "Do Not Call" file is updated monthly and communicated to D.M.A. member and non-member subscriber companies four times per year - in January, April, July, and October, so it may take some time before you begin to see a noticeable reduction in the volume of solicitations that you receive.
Note: New consumer registrations for the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) have not been accepted by the DMA since November 1, 2006, except for consumers living in the states of Pennsylvania, Maine, and Wyoming. TPS is the official Do Not Call Registry for these three states. Residents of all other states should utilize the FTC's National Do Not Call Registry and/or their state Do Not Call Registry.
For consumers in these three states, registration with the Direct Marketing Association's Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is free by mail. The Direct Marketing Association's mailing address for removal requests from telephone marketing lists is:
Telephone Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
PO Box 1559
Carmel, New York 10512
Note: A Request for Exclusion letter for the D.M.A. Telephone Preference Service is included in the FRAUDFacts Download Library.
FRAUDFacts Tip: It is important to note that registration with the D.M.A.'s Telephone Preference Service is certainly not foolproof. Registration will not affect sequentially dialed automated recorded message (computerized) calls. If you receive an unwanted automated telemarketing call from a company, you should listen to the message and obtain the company's name and address or phone number. You can then contact the company directly and request to be placed on the company's own Do-Not-Call list.
